Kickstarting Subjectify This! for Endangered Bodies New York is a group of exercisers from a YMCA in a London suburb. Dance is wonderful for those times when we may actually want to be admired as a thing of beauty. However, dance does not have to be self-objectifying in a limiting way. It can in fact be extremely empowering for those of us fortunate enough to be in possession of the types of bodies that make dance possible. Need convincing? Then read on ...
"I am 82 years of age and lost my darling husband in May 2008. Never in my life did I think I would ever "Tap Dance". However I treated myself to tap shoes for my 80th birthday and found the wonderful "Jill Baldock" who is a fantastic teacher and so kind and caring. Through her classes I have met and made friends with some lovely ladies of various ages and talent. They have given me my life back and made dancing such fun." (Lorna Parker, London)
"I have the joy of teaching dance to a multitude of wonderful ladies of all ages, all backgrounds. I love this experience and am very humbled by the lovely comments that come rushing to me. Dance is not just about moving individual ‘bits’ of the body, it moves your soul, your heart, your imagination, your expression. Your thoughts can not be anywhere else. Dance absorbs you completely. The body becomes a free instrument that comes alive.
I love the community aspect. So many ladies have immense family problems and us women usually bear the brunt of all family issues. We have such strength to cope and need an outlet. Dance classes provide a support, as we all understand and sometimes all you require is a smile and a space to express other feelings.
I am also amazed at the ages of some of my participants….dancers are getting younger!!" (Jill Baldock)
